The Irish Moiled Breed
The Irish Moiled is one of Ireland's oldest and rarest cattle breeds, known for its distinctive appearance and dual-purpose utility. These cattle are naturally polled (hornless) and typically exhibit a red coat with a white line along the back and underbelly, accompanied by a flecked face. They are medium-sized, with cows weighing around 550 kg. Renowned for their hardiness, Irish Moiled cattle are well-suited to both beef and milk production, making them versatile assets to farms.
The First Hour of a Newborn Calf's Life
The initial hour after birth, often referred to as the 'Golden Hour,' is vital for a calf's health and development. Key practices during this period include:
Assessment of Vitality: Evaluating the calf's breathing, responsiveness, and overall vigor to ensure it has successfully transitioned to life outside the womb.
Calf Resuscitation: If necessary, clearing airways and stimulating breathing to address any immediate health concerns.
Colostrum Intake: Ensuring the calf consumes colostrum, the first milk rich in antibodies, within the first two hours to bolster its immune system.
Navel Care: Cleaning and disinfecting the navel to prevent infections.
Implementing these practices promptly is crucial for the calf's survival, health, and future productivity.
